Doris Elizabeth Thornton, daughter of the late John Arthur and Ethel Inez Thornton, was born on April 26, 1936 in Anniston, Alabama. She was the oldest daughter of nine siblings.
She worked at and retired from blue Mountain Cotton Mill after 28 years. `After retirement, she continued to work to support her children doing different odds and ends jobs to make ends meet. Most of the time she would have two jobs because times were hard. She worked hard to ensure that her daughters, Diann and Lisa, would not only finish high school, but also get a college education. After they finished college, Doris decided to move to Georgia with her oldest daughter.
Doris accepted Christ in her life and attended new Jerusalem Church of God in Anniston, Alabama, where she became a dedicated and devoted member. Down through the years, time brought about several changes in leadership, resulting in her moving her membership several times. She finally joined Peter’s Rock Holiness Church in Anniston, Alabama, where she remained for several years. Throughout her journey, Mother Thronton made sure that she raised her family in the church while teaching them how to pray and trust in God.
On the morning of February 17, 2024, Doris answered the Master’s call at the Christian City Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Union City, Georgia. Beautiful memories will always remain with: her daughters, Diann Thornton of Fayetteville, Georgia and Lisa Delores Ackey of Jacksonville, Alabama; her son-in-law, Thaddeus Orlando Ackey, Sr. of Jacksonville, Alabama; two grandsons, Thaddeus Orlando (Shavone) Ackey, Jr. of Anniston, Alabama and Steven Dewayne Ackey of Jonesboro, Georgia; three sisters, Ethel lee Thornton, Queen Esther Thornton and Tawanza Gail Thornton, all of Detroit, Michigan; one brother, Henry Lee (Betty) Thornton of North Carolina; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
