Margarette Longstreth Obituary

Sister Margarette Longstreth was born on August 20, 1928 in Escambia County, Alabama, in the city of Atmore, to Armintha Washington (Broughton) and Willie Washington. Both parents preceded her in death.

She accepted the Lord at a young age and always sustained her faith in church. In Anniston, she joined the Mount Calvary Baptist Church and Bethel Baptist Church, respectively. Until her health declined, she was an active member of both churches and served in various capacities. She was Assistant Sunbeam Leader Missionary Board, Sunday School teacher, Sunbeam Advisor and Director and a member of the Nurses Guild.

After completing high school, she went away to college and completed her degree from Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama. After graduating, she worked briefly in Villa Rica, Georgia as a teacher and later moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to continue her teaching career. She subsequently took more classes at Temple University and Cheyney University, both in Philadelphia. While attending classes she met and married Dr. Daniel S. Longstreth. She later moved back to Anniston, Alabama and made it her home.

She was an esteemed member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated where she held several offices including President. She received her Silver Star Status twenty-five years of service.

Her life has always been about service, as she also worked on several civic organizations. She has served on the Fort McClellan Restoration Advisory Board, the Zoning Board of Anniston, NAACP local secretary, and Retired Senior Volunteer Program just to name a few. Above all of her many affiliations, her most rewarding career was her many years of service to developing young minds as a “Teacher”. She taught approximately twenty years in the Anniston City School System at Woodstock Elementary School, Cobb Junior High School, and retired from Anniston Middle School.

On Sunday, April 14, 2024, Sister Longstreth peacefully transitioned from this life to her heavenly home. She was the oldest sister of Dannie Mae Trammell, her “baby sis” and they were affectionately called the “Golden Girls” among the family. She also leaves to cherish her memory: her daughter, Danica Margarita (Eddie B.Thomas, Jr.) Thomas, whom she lived with most recently; a devoted niece, Vicki Renee’ Trammell; two granddaughters, Sydney Renee’ Thomas and Monica Danielle Thomas; a host of cousins in the Anniston and Atmore areas; and her devoted family friends, Reverend and Mrs. Levi Lyles, and Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Burdell. She was also served by two skilled and devoted caregivers, Mrs. Ruby Haynes Mason and Mrs. Helene Joyner.
