John Spaulding, Sr. Obituary

John Thomas Spaulding Sr. was born on November 8, 1940 in Springfield, KY and departed this life on November 12, 2018 at Compassus Hospice Care Suites in Birmingham, AL with his daughter and son by his side. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Mary Elizabeth (Porter) Spaulding, his mother Annie Bell (Kennedy)Spaulding, and Father, John Elwood Spaulding. At an early age he accepted Christ at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. in 1975 he relocated his family to Jacksonville, AL. and he joined First Baptist Church where he was a devoted church member and member of the music ministry. He was employed by the Anniston Army Depot for 27 years before his retirement. He served in the Gulf War as a civilian with the Anniston Army Depot travel team as a tank repairman and received several awards from the Army Commander during that time. He also served in the U.S. Army where he played All Army football and was on the Army boxing team and basketball team. Music, sports and fishing were his hobbies. He coached several youth sports (basketball, football and baseball) for nearly 38 years for the City of Jacksonville Parks and Recreation. He also played softball with the Eastwood Trojans, City of Anniston’s sixty and older league, Bynum softball team, and various other community teams. He was a self-taught guitar and Bass player, singer and song-writer. He was lead singer of The Montclairs and House Rockers. These bands were the opening act at Club Cherry and Club 68 in Lebanon, KY which was one of the first stops for the “Chitterling Circuit”. The “Chitterling Circuit” featured acts by ike and Tina Turner, Lil’ Richard, otis Redding and James Brown to name a few. He leaves to cherish his memories two daughters: Donna Spaulding Robinson of Jacksonville, AL and Kimberly Spaulding of Anniston, AL; one son: John T. Spaulding Jr (Shante) of San Antonio, TX; three sisters: Annie Mary Spaulding of Covington, KY, Betty Clark of oakland, CA, and June Nutter of Atlanta, GA; one brother: William Spaulding (Melanie) of Goshen, KY; ten grandchildren Ausha Cameron of San Antonio, TX, Javier Spaulding (Laura) and Jaylan Martin of Baton Rouge, LA, Micah Maxwell of Anniston, AL, John Spaulding iii, Jonnesia Spaulding, Joshua Spaulding, and Jayla Spaulding all of Columbus, GA, Aniyah Robinson of Jacksonville, AL and Johanna Spaulding of San Antonio, TX; five great grandchildren: Kiran Kelly and Bella Cameron of San Antonio, TX, Jai’Leigh Spaulding and Kennedy Martin of Baton Rouge, LA, and Logann Maxwell of Tuscaloosa, AL; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
