Alma Lillian Parker-Bowie, the seventh child born January 31, 1932 to the late Deacon George and Mrs. Laura B. Parker in Billingsley, Alabama (Autauga County). The family moved to Clanton, Alabama (Chilton County) where Alma attended Elementary through high school.
Alma was baptized and united with the Morning Star Baptist Church under the pastorage of Reverend Stallworth. She was very active in Sunday School, Church and the Baptist Young Peoples Union.
Alma moved to Anniston, Alabama in 1951 following her graduation from Chilton County Training School. She united with Friendship Baptist Church under Pastor R.J. White. She remained there until she was called to her new Heavenly Home.
Alma held a few jobs, but made history being among the first Black cashiers to integrate S.H. Kress & Co. in Anniston. After eight years working in the department store, she was hired as a telephone operator at South Central Bell Telephone company and retired from AT&T after more than twenty-one years.
Alma was preceded in death by; her parents, Deacon George Parker and Laura B. Parker; and infant daughter, Beverly Jean Parker; as well as all her siblings, Professor John and Addlene Parker, Reverend Dr. H. David and Willie Mae Parker, SFC (Ret) Walter L. and Rosa Lee Parker, Ethel P. and Dr. Andrew Carr, SFC (Ret) Tommie Lee and Marian Parker, Annie P. and Lewis Jones, and Ruth E. Parker.
Alma leaves to cherish her memories: daughter, Benita B. Bateman; grandchildren, Glim Bateman III (Christi) and Deidra Bateman (Danielle); great grandchildren, Toryque, Shayla, Bryce Ash and Daratu Bateman. Alma is also survived by: sister-in-law Flora D. Parker as well as many dearly loved nieces, nephews, extended family and friends who meant so much to her.
The family would especially like to thank Paulette Walker and family, the Lyles family and Butch Rhoades for their faithful and dedicated friendship.
