Harold Edward Washington, Sr. was born on April 16, 1936, to the late Rev. Dennis C. and Bessie M. Randall Washington in Mt. Meigs, Alabama, and entered into eternal rest and ecstasy on September 8, 2016.

Harold experienced an enriched life. At an early age, he professed faith in the Lord Jesus and was baptized into fellowship of the Seventeenth Street Missionary Baptist Church by his father, who served as its pastor. He remained a faithful and dedicated member for more than seventy years. He served as a deacon, trustee, church treasurer, Sunday school teacher and superintendent, Bible study teacher, choir memver, and chairman of the Challenge to Build Committee. He was a part of many other church auxiliaries as well.

On Jaanuary 21, 1961, Harold was joined in holy matrimony to Anna D. Higgins. To this union, two children were born: Valarie Gail and Harold Edward, Jr., who preceded him in death.

He taught in the public school system of Alabama for more than forty years, ending his career as Coordinator of Vocational Industrial Education at Anniston High School. While teaching, he was a role model to and was loved by many students, who often thanked him for having helped ot shape their lives. For many summers, he served in various roles at the National Baptist Sunday School Publishing Board in Nashville, TN. He was known for being the ultimate gentleman throughout his life, and was admired for his perseverance, fortitude, and trail-blazing efforts in his home, church, community and profession.

Harold's professional affiliations were many, including the Alabama Vocational Association, Trade & Industrial Education Association, and the National Education Association. His fraternal and civic affiliations included, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. (Life Member), Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, 33rd Degree Mason and Shriners, Grand Junior Warden of Prince Hall Free and Accepted Masons of the State of Alabama, the NAACP, the SCLC, and the Democratic Club of Calhoun County. He was also a member of the Anniston Area Alumni, Alabama A&M University.

Harold engaged in many different pastimes, including traveling, transporting cakes (which had been made by his wife), participating in family reunions, restoring cars, bicycling and motorcycling, bowling, visiting with family and friends, playing board games, playing the saxophone, and above all, researching and planning Sunday school and Bible study lessons. He also enjoyed manicuring his lawn (which was proven upon his having received an "Anniston Beautification Award" for his well-kept yard). Being a "jack of all trades", he felt that there was nothing too memial for him to do, especially when it came to serving his church.

Harold was preceded in death by: his son, Harold Edward Washington, Jr; his parents, Rev. D.C. Washington, Sr. and Mrs. Bessie M.R. Washington; his parents-in-law, Mr. Louis Higgins and Mrs. Gertrude I. Higgins; his siblings, William moses, Dennis Comer, Jr., Charles Louis Fisher Washington and Bessie Mae Jones.

He will be greatly missed by: his loving and devoted wife, Anna; his daughter and son-in-law, Valarie and Hosea Hester; two sisters-in-law, Theresa Washington and Anita Higgins; two brothers-in-law, Dr. George E. Jones and Jerome Higgins; godchildren, Anthony Chatmon III and Elizabeth Hughley; step-grandchildren, Latasha and Jacques Hester; and his last home-caregiver, Betty Bennett; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
