Mozell Graham Merritt was born to the union of the late Zenious and Louella Hammock Graham on September 16, 1925, in Lowell, Georgia. She was an only child.

She grew up in Lowell, Georgia (Carroll County), where she attended school in local churches. During these times, she only attended school during the winter months and picked cotton during the summer months. The Davis family was able to persuade her parents to allow Mozell to stay with them and attend school in Birmingham. She started school and excelled very well. Soon her parents were able to move to Anniston, Alabama, and establish a home. Mozell was able to graduate from high school. She was one of the oldest living alumni of Cobb High School in Anniston. She attended almost every class reunion and was even selected as the Grand Marshal to lead one of their annual parades.

One morning her father announced that they were going to attend Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church and join there. So began her life at Mt. Calvary. She had a beautiful voice and sang in the choir. She attended Sunday School. She would visit the sick and take her delicious homemade blueberry muffins as often as she could. And we all loved her delectable pound cake that she made so well for church and family dinners. She attended Mission Meetings at various churches in the Snow Creek District. She was often cast in various drama ministries, where she would portray very outspoken characters.

Her father died suddenly while working up north. She was going to attend college to become a nurse, but had to find a job to help her mother who had taken ill. After her mother recovered, she continued working various jobs. During this time, she met the "love" of her life, Henry B. Merritt. To this blessed union, two sons were born, Henry B Merritt, Jr. and Zenious Floyd Merritt.

Mrs. Merritt had various jobs during her lifetime. She was the first Black floor Salesperson to work at Spidle Moorefield Jewelers on Noble Street in Anniston. She was blessed to retire from this job.

Mrs. Merritt entered eternal rest on Monday, April 6, 2026, at home with family. She was 100 years old. She lived and cherished every day knowing that God had been so good to her. Her Motto: "Eat garlic and keep moving."

Mrs. Merritt will be forever missed by: her sons, Floyd (Lisa) Merritt and Henry B. Merritt, Jr.; grandson, Alexander and granddaughters, Zierre, Brianna and Tianna; and a host of relatives and friends. She loved all of her family members and her church family.
