Walter E. Sharpe was born on June 6, 1940 in Weeksville section of Pasquotank County, Elizabeth City, North Carolina to Rev. Butler Sharpe, Sr. and Elsie Patterson Sharpe. He grew up in a God-fearing home. His Christian experiences were received at the New Salem Missionary Baptist Church. Walter was one that knew God and most of all, had a special relationship with Him.
He received his academic education in the public schools of Pasquotank County. He relocated in the North before he began serving his country. He served for many years and retired from the United States Army. Somewhere along the way, Walter met and married Carrie Whiteside. They traveled the world. When Carrie's health declined, Walter was by her side and was her primary caregiver. He was a man of henesty, loyalty, integrity, sincerity and concern for his family, church, community and friends.
He was devoted to the Lord and served as an Elder in his church as well as Pastor. His greatest desire was to be of service to the Lord and to mankind.
Having finished his course, Walter leaves to cherish his memory; one sister, Dr. Mary E. Sharpe; three brothers, James C. Sharpe, Gilbert (Joan) Sharpe and Earl (Patricia) Sharpe; one aunt, Berta Patterson Baum; five sisters-in-law, Beatrice Sharpe, Mattie Jackson, Annie Mae Elston; one brother-in-law, Jimmy Lewis; and a host of other relatives and many spiritual co-workers. His special caretakers were Elaine and Roy Crum.
