Mrs. Willie E. Shortt was born to the parentage of Mr. Clyde and Willie M. Atkinson on March 14, 1943. She was a proud citizen of Hobson City, Alabama.

She attended and grew up in the New Hope Baptist Church. She attended the Calhoun County Training School. After graduating, she relocated to Washington, D.C., where those who knew her would call her "Shortt", "Tootie", or "Valentine".
