Josephine Gooden Obituary

Josephine “Phine” Gooden was born to the parentage of Mr. Joe Garrett and Marie Greer Thompson Garrett. Josephine attended Cobb Avenue High School and was a member of the volleyball team. She was incredibly competitive. Her senior year was exciting! The volleyball team won The State Championship and she was awarded Most Athletic. Her love for sports did not end once she graduated high school. She enjoyed watching college football. You would often hear her say “ROLL TIDE!”.

Josephine has always been known for her caring ways. She became “momma” to David when he was 6 months old. The goodness, patience, and kindness she always displayed was evident by all those who entrusted her to care for their young, loved ones.

Josephine married Jim T Gooden in April of 2002. Later that same year she dedicated her life to Jehovah in November of 2002. She showed her faith in Jehovah without letup through her work in the field ministry and at home. No matter what Josephine’s circumstances were she always had a love and joy for preaching the good news of God’s Kingdom. The mildness and self-control she had was manifested throughout her years as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. She was certainly peaceable with all men. Josephine was genuinely loved by all who she considered family as well as friends. Her vibrant personality and big heart will truly be missed until revelation 21:3,4 is fulfilled.

She was preceded in death by: her husband, Jim T Gooden, Jr.; her son, Jim T Gooden, III; her parents, Joe and Marie Garrett; siblings, Raymond, George, Roosevelt, and Sophia Thompson, Joseph (her twin) and Donald Garrett; grandparents, Albert and Ollie Greer; mother-in-law, Lorine Gooden; brother-in-law, Harry L Riggins; sisters-in-law, Elnora and Magdeline Thompson; Jimmie Lou Cox and Sarah Fox; and nephew, Donavon Mims.

She leaves to cherish her memory; a son, David Richard Mays, Jr of Anniston, AL; a stepdaughter, Chanda Eaton of new York; four grandchildren, D’Andre, Emily, Nathalie, and Tyrek Mays, all of Anniston, AL; two sisters, Ellie Garrett and Melba G Riggins both of Anniston, AL; a sister-in-law, Lorine Tyler of Salley, SC; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins as well as other relatives and friends.
